I look forward to reading Marredbury when I get the chance to! 😄
Out of curiosity, would you call something like my Retelling Myths series, which was a collection of short stories that came out monthly, all based around retelling older stories, a serial anthology? Or would it be excluded because it was based around a theme rather than the same world?
Would something like the Sherlock Holmes short stories count? Or would it be excluded because they were more centered around a set of characters rather than a place?
I don't think it's necessarily that the series take place in the same world. Serials have a through story and I think that's not present in all story collections. I imagine a serial anthology being that kind of hybrid of a through story and a collection of shorter works. Maybe a world is the connection (like in The Gulp by Alan Baxter) or we are following a set of characters. Palimspet follows one house, though the house moves overall settings with each season, while the overall story is revealed throughout the seasons.
I don't have a clear answer to your questions. You bring up some great ideas. What if the myths were all in the same world? Do the characters interact across different stories?
I've also only read a couple of Sherlock Holmes stories. We are following the same set of characters across them though. Perhaps they could fit in the serial anthology.
(Sorry for the late reply, I've been recovering from a minor surgery.)
Ah, I see - so the term is a bit malleable?
As a lot of terms can be. 😆
It does seem like my Retelling Myths series would be more of just an anthology though - since aside from the theme of retelling stories, there isn't too much connecting the different shorts (with the exception that some stories do take place in the same world and/or feature the same characters; but that's more of an exception rather than the rule).
And that Sherlock Holmes would be more apt for the term.
Ooooh - interesting idea!

Great questions! You're making me think.

Thanks for taking the time to answer! 🙂
I'm not even sure if it is a term at this point. Talking it out is helpful.
I love the connection to Sherlock Holmes. I'll have to explore that more.
Hope you're recovering well!
Thank you! 😄
