I’ve been thoroughly enjoying writing this piece, and also stressing when I hit blocks. I’ve actually been reading about writer’s block because of this piece. The month of April (and quite a bit of May) was a wash of early wake ups with my toddler and staring at a blank screen, totally lost on what to write. Not so fun, but the book I’m reading on writer’s block has been really helpful. I’ve never been one to subscribe to the idea of writer’s block. You push through, you create habits and stick with them, even when you aren’t in the mood. Sitting down and getting words on the page is like building a muscle, you need to revisit and practice over and over again or the muscle atrophies.

I know all of this. I still believe that having a regular writing practice is the biggest secret in finding any kind of success with words, but this time, I was still stuck. Marcy Pusey’s book, Overcoming Writer’s Block, categorizes the type of block based on the reasons behind the block. She does recommend consistent habits and, sometimes, pushing through, but she goes deeper than that. The psych major in me was thrilled with her use of the brain and how it functions and creates block. She also uses car upkeep as a metaphor, “getting under the hood” to understand the why behind the block. I need to be a better car owner with my car maintenance, so I connected to that too, haha.

ANYWAY, long story short, I am getting there with the draft, about a month behind. I had hoped to have it done before school let out to summer, but life had other plans. She usually does….
